Les guitares rock sont rarement émouvantes. Il y a presque toujours un trop et un pas assez qui entravent leur expressivité. Trop de boucan pour compenser une technique approximative, ou trop de virtuosité et de vélocité qui finissent par distancer ce fichu poids mort qu'est la sensibilité. Les guitaristes de Shed Seven, qu'ils s'appellent Joe Johnson ou Paul Banks, restent pour leur part des brutes au coeur tendre. On an Island With You a beau saturer, distordre, cogner, métalliser, carillonner et tinter à un rythme soutenu, jamais il ne perd la mélodie ni l'harmonie. Jusqu'au solo final, fait de quelques notes toute simples, toute belles, emplies d'une indéfinissable tristesse. Il me cause la même peine qu'un cri jeté à la face du monde pour dire ce que l'on avait de bon en soi, juste avant de presser le doigt sur la détente.
